Migration Agent Registration Number or DIBP Client ID? Which is better?

There have been many incidents of applicants who pay thousands and thousands of dollars to offshore agencies to assist them in their visa applications only to end up losing it all because of the incompetence of offshore agents.

Yes it is true that anyone can apply for a visa and that you do not need a migration agent for this but if you are paying money for someone to assist you and provide you with immigration advice, wouldn't you want someone who is qualified?

The simplest way to see if you are dealing with a registered migration agent or not is to look for the Migration Agent Registration Number (MARN). It is mandatory for all registered agents to display this in advertising or their websites.

Many offshore companies will display what seems to be a registration number such as a ‘Client ID’ issued by the Australian government, however, don’t be fooled! This is not a registration number.

What does registration mean for migration agents?

  • Accountability - we answer to MARA and strict registration requirements
  • Australian qualifications – either a lawyer or have undergone the Masters course
  • Professional indemnity insurance – means you can sue if migration agents get it wrong
  • LegendCom PAM resources – means we have the advantage and access to the inner workings of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection
  • Strict accounting rules
  • Code of Conduct

What does a Client ID mean?

  • This is just like any visa applicant’s ID that helps the Department know who you are and what you are applying for
  • There are no requirements in obtaining a ‘Client ID’ except for applying for a visa
  • No rules or regulations governing them
  • No legal action against them

The difference between a MARN and Client ID is simply experience, insurance and legal recourse versus handing over your money to your grandmother to lodge your application.

If you're going to be entrusting someone with your money and your life, it's better to trust someone who is regulated by the Australian government and hence accountability, than an offshore company who answers to no one except their conscience.

Know the difference and don't be tricked into using unscrupulous operators who claim that they're 'authorised by the Department' or have ties with the Australian Government because of this.
