NSW Nomination process in 2015 – changes to the 190 visa

The NSW will be changing the nomination process for the Skilled Nominated Subclass 190 visa and the changes will start from February 2015.

The new process will a selection based invitation-only process .

This means that an applicant will need to submit an EOI through the SkillSelect system and then NSW will rank the applicants and invite the top performing ones to apply for a NSW nomination.

How does this work?

  1. Expression of Interest: you submit an EOI through the SkillSelect system and indicate that you want to apply for the NSW nomination for a 190 visa.
  2. Invitation by NSW Government: NSW will then rank the everyone according to a competitive criteria and then invite the top applicants to apply for a NSW nomination. You will then have 14 days of being invited to apply to submit a nomination application.
  3. NSW Nomination application: you will submit a NSW nomination application and it will take 12 weeks to process.
  4. 190 visa application: if it is a success outcome, you will receive an invitation to apply for the 190 visa. You must apply for the 190 visa within 60 days of receiving the invitation. This will usually take 4 months to process.

Additional information

Occupations: The NSW Occupations List will be updated in the first weeks of February 2015 so keep an eye out for the new list.

Quotas: There's no indication of quotas at this time

Selection criteria: Generally highest overall points score will rank you higher. Also in the categories of English Language Ability and Work Experience. Therefore it would be wise to maximise the points in these categories to maximise your chances of being invited by NSW.

What's next?

  • Make sure you meet the requirements of the 190 visa
  • Make sure your occupation is on the NSW Occupation List
  • Organise your skills assessment with the correct assessing authority
  • Maximise your points for each category
  • Lodge an EOI through the SkillSelect system
